Migrate from Outlook to Thunderbird

Migrate from Outlook to Thunderbird

How to use Thunderbird instead of Microsoft Outlook with all of the important features that Outlook offers (calendar, address book, …) still available to you.

Download thunderbird 45.8.0 @ https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/45.8.0/win32/. Select your preferred language and download the installer.

Account settings

Add your e-mail account to Thunderbird, this should be pretty straightforward. You can edit the details manually if you have troubles.

Add new account
Edit settings

For the University you can add:

imap: mail.uantwerpen.be 993 SSL/TLS with normal password
smtp: smtp.uantwerpen.be 25 no encryption normal password

Address Book

Go to your address book and add a new LDAP directory.

Add new LDAP Directory
Add a new LDAP address book

For the University you can add:

UAntwerpen - Derden
UAntwerpen - Employees
UAntwerpen - Students

To link to your company exchange calendar and see (and edit) your events we need lightning (the default calendar extension of Thunderbird) and a plugin called Exchange EWS Provider (found on GitHub here: https://github.com/Ericsson/exchangecalendar/releases, https://github.com/ExchangeCalendar/exchangecalendar/releases/tag/v4.0.0-beta4)
NOTE: this plugin will not work with the GMAIL calendar integration and in any newer Thunderbird version)

Add a network calendar
Select Microsoft exchange
Give your calendar a colour and a name
Try the autodiscovery first

Accessing a shared calendar ?
Add a new calendar and proceed as above, but as the username put that colleagues e-mail address.

Useful settings for the University

Server URL: https://mail.uantwerpen.be/EWS/Exchange.asmx
Domain name: AD

  1. Hi,

I stumbled on your website while trying to setup the university of antwerp exchange connection to calenders. Your link was not accepted as server URL.

I get a the following error:

Error during checking of server and mailbox: HTTP Client error 401: Unauthorized

    (Code: -19)

Can you provide full details for the UA-config ? Thanks ! 🙂

    1. Do you have another calendar plugin like gmail or something. I found the two aren’t compatible or have issues working together. Make sure you are using hosted exchange, not office 360

      * The URL is correct, put that in the “server URL” field.
      * Primary e-mail is your full uantwerp email
      * Username is your login name to login to webmail or on your university pc/laptop.
      * Domain is AD
      * Leave shared folder blank
      * Folder base is “calendar folder”
      * Path below folder base: /

Tip: primary email can be used to access shared calendars. Just use the email of the other person.
